Chances are, the first thing you notice about our pub isn’t the food – it’s the interiors. That’s because long before you can place your order, you’re soaking up the carefully curated ambiance that we’ve created, honed by our co-founder and interior designer, Georgie Pearman.
A Historic Welcome: Timeless Charm Meets Modern Comfort
Of course, as a historic pub, we didn’t want to tear everything out and replace it. Instead, Georgie ensured that the classic features of the architecture, such as the wooden floors and beams, greet you as soon as you walk in. After all, as a 17th century coaching inn, the pub’s raison d’etre was to welcome weary travellers with a fortifying meal and warm bed. And that’s not changed much today – even if the clientele might have.
Paying homage to our history, we’ve also added vintage style glass lantern lighting and sturdy wooden furniture to the downstairs pub rooms to heighten the sense of being in the English countryside. There are antique paintings of country scenes hanging on the walls, as well as taxidermy and elegant candelabras.
Cosy Corners: Snugs, Lounges and Fireside Comforts at the Double Red Duke
Meanwhile, in the snugs and lounges (a warren of rooms is something you inherit in a historic pub like this) we upped the cosy factor by adding armchairs upholstered in dark brown leather or rich colourful velvet, perfect for sinking into with an after-dinner drink. For extra cosiness, there’s our fireplaces too, which has become a real focal point in the winter months and has the best seat in the house, in our opinion.
Bringing the Outdoors In: The Light-Filled Garden Room
And while historic buildings are typically dark and dingy, we installed skylights into the main room to add more natural light (it’s particularly atmospheric in a storm, too). The garden room in particular is gorgeous and bright, with doors that open onto the kitchen gardens (where we grow a lot of our own botanicals), while large potted plants further bring the outside in.
Boutique Bedrooms at the Double Red Duke: Countryside Elegance with Luxurious Touches
Upstairs in the bedrooms, we wanted more of a boutique hotel feel, with an English countryside sensibility. Each of the 19 rooms is individually decorated to feel informal yet luxurious, with rich fabrics and vibrant patterns. Georgie sourced the wallpapers and fabrics from local artisans, including Lewis & Wood, Lefroy Brooks, Fermoie, Colefax & Fowler and Parker & Jules.
All of the rooms have a walk-in shower and many feature roll-top bathtubs, with the Arch Room making a statement of it by placing a bright red one under the archway opposite the bed. Vintage Roberts radios and refurbished Bakelite telephones in bright hues complete the look, while 100 Acre toiletries and fluffy dressing gowns ensure total relaxation. Some bedrooms also boast a shared outdoor terrace space, and are suitable for dogs too.
